Frequently Asked Questions
No. We host accessible events in Kansas City to give everyone the option, but attendance is never required. Every individual, whether they’re part of our Independent Supported Living (ISL) or day program, has the right to choose how they spend their day.
Some people look forward to celebrations, never missing the opportunity to meet new people and practice their dance moves. Others find spending time with a smaller group in a more private setting, or spending time alone, more comfortable. At Harmony House, we respect everyone’s preferences. Whether someone wants to join every event, try things out here and there, or watch from the sidelines, we encourage everyone to engage how and when they choose to.
Beyond accessible physical spaces, we also prioritize emotional safety and individual choice. We design every detail of our events with different needs and preferences in mind, respecting every person’s boundaries so they can participate in the ways that feel best for them.
If anyone needs a break, we encourage families and caregivers to help their loved ones create that space. Whether it’s stepping outside for some air or finding a quieter corner, sometimes, a few minutes to relax and breathe helps people return to the celebration feeling refreshed. Other times, a little encouragement from staff or a family member is what they need to reset. In some cases, people are just ready for some alone time and don’t want to go back to the party.
And that’s okay.
At Harmony House, we respect independence, which starts with choice. Every event is an open door, not an obstacle. Our team recognizes that every individual’s social and sensory preferences are unique, as are their emotional triggers. We listen first, respecting everyone’s pace and walking alongside them—never trying to rush or push them.
